Visually Impaired Turn to Smartphones to See Their World

In recent years, many smartphone apps that are aimed at blind people have appeared.

  • Blind people with an iPhone will be able to use the same technology we do.
  • Advocates for the blind say that the device could be the biggest assertive aid to the blind since braille was invented.
  • People with vision problems can use voice commands to read and write.
  • Windows phones offer some voice commands.
  • One of Apple's features helps blind people take photos.
  • The phone can say how many heads are in the picture and where they are in the frame.
  • Accessibility innovations have also led to using a smartphone’s camera to allow the blind and visually impaired to shop, count money and live independently in ways many of us take for granted.
  • Apples tecnology includes VoiceOver and lets blind people interact with their devices using multitouch gestures on the screen.
  • The iPhone will read aloud the name of each application.
  • Swiping two fingers down the screen will promt the phone to read the text out loud in the reading app.
  • The iPhone also supports 40 different braille bluetooth keyboards
  • Another innovations like Siri and Dictation help users type, read calendars and launch apps like Facebook  and Twitter.
  • These demonstrations clearly show how a smartphone with accessibility software can open many avenues to help the blind and visually impaired be more included in everyday life.
